Old Testament Survey I & II
This course is a survey of the history, literature, and content of the Old Testament, with an emphasis on the historical background of the Old Testament and the Christology contained within it. The course will consist of reading and studying the whole of the Old Testament. Students will continue reading the Old Testament throughout the extent of the school year, ultimately completing the entire Old Testament.
Goals & Objectives
To enable the student:
- to gain knowledge of the content of the various books of the Old Testament and their identifying characteristics
- to gain knowledge of the chronology of Old Testament writings and events
- to gain knowledge of the various types of literature in the Old Testament
- to gain knowledge of the cultural settings of the Old Testament World (economic, political, social, and religious), with particular reference to the Hebrew, Egyptian, and Canaanite culture
- to develop skills in moral reasoning by reading and reacting to the foundational texts of Old Testament ethics
- to do reflective self-analysis by applying personal experience and critical thinking to the development of individual values
