Authority of the Believer

The necessity for this course of study is best summed up in the words of J.A. MacMillan in his book, The Authority of the Believer: “There are few subjects relating to the Christian life concerning which there is so little exact knowledge as that of the authority of the believer. This is not because such authority is the property only of a few elect souls. On the contrary, it is the possession of every true child of God. It is one of the, ‘all things received in Christ.’ Its reception dates from the soul’s contact with Calvary. Probably because of the extreme importance of a correct understanding of the privileges and responsibilities [of authority], and because of the power which they confer on a militant believer, the enemy has specially sought to hold back the knowledge from God’s people. For it is strangely true that, although its principles are set forth in a definite way in the Epistle to the Ephesians, there is very little grasp of them by the majority of even spiritual believers.”

Three types of authority will be analyzed:

  1. Horizontal Authority: This involves understanding the believer's relationships with others and how these interactions influence the church community.
  2. Vertical Authority: This explores the believer's relationship with God, recognizing the power and responsibility that flow from this divine connection.
  3. Diagonal Authority: This examines the collaborative aspect of authority, where believers work alongside God as co-laborers, blending both horizontal and vertical dynamics. Through engaging discussions and practical applications, students will gain a rich understanding of their identity in Christ and the impact of walking confidently in their God-given authority, without fear or intimidation.

Goals & Objectives

To enable the student:

  • to understand Christians are in a real, daily battle against the powers of darkness; one must learn to live awake and aware at all times
  • to understand the battle has been won through the Cross of Christ, but all believers must stand and enforce the victory in order to defeat the daily attacks of the enemy
  • to realize the authority one has in the areas of healing, deliverance, prayer, and evangelism
  • to gain understanding of the power of words, declarations, vows, and prayer
  • to gain understanding of the judicial system of heaven and in doing so, realize how to ‘evict’ the enemy from one’s life
  • to gain understanding of the rights and access into one’s life often given to the enemy through sin, disobedience, ‘open doors,’ and words
  • to gain an understanding of the power of the name of Jesus
  • to gain an understanding in praying the Word of God
  • to develop an awareness of common lies of the enemy and how to combat those lies
  • to gain an understanding of the tactics, devices, and common tools of the enemy and how to guard oneself against them
