Revival History
This course offers an in-depth exploration of the history of revival movements over the past five centuries. Students will engage with the significant works of church historians, revivalists, and reformers who have documented the transformative actions of God throughout this period. The curriculum will include lectures focusing on key historical revivals, complemented by readings from the textbook.
Students will trace the emergence and impact of revivalism, beginning with Martin Luther’s pivotal role in the Reformation in 1517 and progressing through to contemporary movements, including the Charismatic Movement. Key figures and events will be highlighted, such as the Quaker Revival led by George Fox, the Moravian Revival under Count Zinzendorf, and the influential Great Awakenings in America and Britain featuring preachers like Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley. Students will examine the significant revivals of 1859, the work of Jonathan Goforth in Asia, and the powerful Welsh Revival led by Evan Roberts, as well as the Azusa Street Revival and its lasting effects into the present day. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how revival has shaped the historical landscape of the church and its ongoing spiritual relevance today.

- recognize the characteristics of a genuine move of God in contrast to a counterfeit move of God
- recognize the significant revival movements that have taken place during the past five hundred years
- recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the revivals in their historical context
- recognize the key revivalists and reformers of the past 500 years
- create a passionate appetite for personal, national, and global awakening
